Is CBD Legal and Healthy?

CBD seems to be everywhere, from your local coffee shop to your favorite spa. Cannabidiol or as it is more commonly known, CBD is getting added to drinks, cocktails, and even lotions, but is it actually legal and safe? Here we’ll look into this topic in a little more detail, so you can have confidence when you make a purchase.

FDA Approval

CBD is considered a supplement, so it does not require FDA approval. However, in 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, the first cannabis derived drug to treat rare seizure syndromes in children. Epidiolex contains purified CBD, which is a naturally occurring compound derived from the cannabis plant.

Is CBD Different to Marijuana?

One of the common misconceptions about CBD is that it is the same as marijuana. While CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant, it is different from THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Studies show that while THC is associated with the high of marijuana, CBD does not create these same effects.

This means that you shouldn’t experience any highs when taking CBD products. Additionally, according to the World Health Organization, unlike marijuana, which is classified as addictive by the CDC, CBD does not have addictive properties.

The CBD Oil Basics

Good quality CBD oil should have only two main ingredients: cannabidiol and an oil made using coconut or hemp seeds so that the compound can be dissolved. Unfortunately, since CBD products are not regulated by the FDA, you need to look carefully at the product you’re purchasing to ensure it doesn’t contain undesirable ingredients.

While there has been limited research conducted on CBD, studies have produced growing evidence that this compound may be a viable treatment for other health issues besides seizure syndromes.  There are currently studies underway examining CBD as a treatment for PTSD, psychosis and other conditions, but to date, there is supporting evidence that CBD can be beneficial for treating anxiety, neuropathic pain and cognitive issues including Alzheimer’s disease.

The Legal Standpoint

There is a legal grey area surrounding CBD, but many states have legalized products despite the compound being extracted from hemp plants. The main legal issues seem to be based on spurious claims about health benefits. There are some unscrupulous companies who market their CBD products as miracle cures for a variety of diseases and illnesses. Obviously, unproven health claims cannot be legally made about any product, including CBD.

Fortunately, the current evidence supports that cannabidiol is safe. There is currently no damning evidence about CBD, but care should be taken as some CBD products contain other ingredients, including THC that could interact with other medications and cause an unintentional high.

Buying CBD

Since CBD products are unregulated, it is crucial to choose a reputable company and a quality product. There are many types of CBD product, including oils, tinctures, vapes, and creams, which can affect dosage and effectiveness. It is important to look for a product that contains no additional ingredients other than the cannabidiol compound and a good quality oil base.
