Is Hemp Oil an Anti-Inflammatory?

Some of the most pervasive and chronic conditions have a common feature; inflammation. Whether you’re looking at diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, or rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation plays a powerful role in these conditions. Higher levels of inflammation manifest as tissue damage and increased production of free radicals creating oxidative stress. Oxidative stress causes damage to fat, proteins, and even DNA. There has been a great deal of research into hot reducing inflammation to protect the tissues. While there are dietary changes, such as reducing sugar and increasing fiber intake can reduce inflammation, there is emerging research showing that hemp oil and the CBD contained in hemp oil has potential to limit inflammation and free radical damage.

The Research

According to a study published in the Free Radical Biology and Medicine journal, the researchers at the University of Mississippi explored the challenges and complexities of trying to target oxidative stress in different disease states and the potential benefits of CBD in these cases. Unlike the other compound associated with cannabis, THC, CBD is non psychotropic and does not produce a high. CBD was first isolated back in 1940 and was chemically characterized sometime later in 1963.

However, it has only been in recent research that CBD has been shown to have wide ranging activity for reducing inflammation and the damage caused by free radicals. CBD modulates immune system function, and the research shows that these modulation effects appear to be quite positive.

For example, CBD has been shown to be effective in managing various types of pain. This is thought to be a manifestation of the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD. These effects are similar or greater than the typical over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs used for the typical aches and pains.

Inflammation and Obesity

Additionally, it is thought that many of the health-related issues that are associated with obesity are consequences of increased inflammation. There is currently extensive research being conducted into CBD in relation to obesity. The goal of this is to reduce some of the significant health consequences. With obesity becoming such a massive issue in the first world, this could provide a fantastic way to combat the associated problems.

So, is Hemp Oil an Effective Anti-Inflammatory?

The research study concluded that oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in many human diseases, and while unraveling the relationship ay be challenging, CBD and hemp oil appear to be a promising start for drug development. The research into medical applications of CBD is currently expanding, and it is sure to have its efficacy validated in the coming months and years.

Good quality hemp oil is safe to use with little to no side effects. However, it is important to choose a good quality product derived from hemp to avoid THC, which is the compound producing the “high” effects of cannabis. A good quality oil should be produced by pressing the hemp seeds, which means that it will contain CBD, but no THC. While seed pressing will produce less CBD than using the stalks and flowers of the plants, it is worth trying to discover the anti-inflammatory effects for yourself.
